Presidents’ Day was established as a federal holiday in 1885 to honor George Washington. Originally observed on February 22, the holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971, which created a three-day weekend for workers. This adjustment contributed to the widespread adoption of the name “Presidents’ Day,” which is now generally recognized as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, with particular emphasis on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays are closely situated in February.
