Modified Phase 1 Water Shortage Enacted by the Southwest Florida Water Management District Causes No Changes in Hernando County
(Brooksville, FL) – The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) has enacted a Modified Phase 1 Water Shortage water use restriction that will go into effect November 21, 2023, through July 1, 2024. Phase 1 enacts a one-day-a-week watering schedule. Hernando County is already at a one-day-a-week watering schedule and has been since July of 2010. Phase 1 currently does not change or impact Hernando County’s current one-day-a-week watering schedule.

All watering must be completed before 8am or after 6pm on the assigned day. Watering days are categorized by the last digit in the address:

  • Monday: Addresses ending in 0 or 1
  • Tuesday: Addresses ending in 2 or 3
  • Wednesday: Addresses ending in 4 or 5
  • Thursday: Addresses ending in 6 or 7
  • Friday: Addresses ending in 8 or 9
  • Friday: Mixed or no address
  • Saturday & Sunday: No watering on weekend days

In Hernando County, the first offense of a water violation will receive a citation that carries a $100 fine. The second offense will receive a citation that carries a $500 fine. This ordinance applies to all sources of water, public supplied and from wells, rivers, lakes or other water bodies.

It is very important that all consumers of water be diligent in using water efficiently to help in preserving and conserving this precious resource. The public will be notified if the water shortage continues and SWFWMD enacts a Phase 2 Water Shortage water use restriction.
