Hernando County Utilities Department Announces Update to Wellhead Protection Area Ordinance

Hernando County Utilities Department Announces
Update to Wellhead Protection Area Ordinance

(Brooksville, FL) – The Hernando County Utilities Department (HCUD) is updating the County’s Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) ordinance, an important tool used to protect the quality of drinking water for residents and businesses.

A Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) is the land area surrounding a public water supply well where groundwater can travel toward the well. Activities within these areas are monitored and managed to help prevent contaminants from entering the drinking water system. WHPA boundaries are determined using scientific analysis, including groundwater flow, aquifer characteristics, and pumping rates.

As part of this ordinance update, WHPA maps will be revised. These changes may affect how certain properties are classified within protection zones. Residents, businesses, and property owners who would like to review the maps or have questions are encouraged to contact HCUD.
