CITY OF BROOKSVILLE CITY COUNCIL DECLARES MARCH 2025 AS DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

CITY OF BROOKSVILLE CITY COUNCIL DECLARES MARCH 2025 AS DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

Brooksville, Florida (March 5, 2025) – The City of Brooksville City Council declared that March 2025 is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month at a regular City Council meeting on Monday, March 3, 2025.

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month calls for understanding, encouragement, and opportunities for people with disabilities so that they can live productive and fulfilling lives. Everyone wants and deserves to enjoy life and feel productive and secure; in March, extra steps are taken to raise awareness about the rights and support of people with developmental disabilities. National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month encourages individuals, agencies, and organizations to celebrate the contributions of those with disabilities to our community through appropriate observances and activities.

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month was made official by President Ronald Reagan on February 26, 1987. Developmental disabilities are defined as impairments in physical, learning, language, or behavioral areas. These disabilities begin during the child’s developmental period, often impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout their lifetime. Though most developmental disabilities occur before a baby is born, they can also occur after birth due to injury, infection, or other factors. Some examples of developmental disabilities include, but are not limited to, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), vision impairment, and hearing loss.

The City Council read the Proclamation, which was accepted by Wayne Cordova, CEO and Co-Founder of Posability, at the Council meeting. Posability is a nonprofit organization located in Hernando County that provides positive opportunities for support to families affected by disabilities through I.M.P.A.C.T. (Inclusion, Ministry, Play, Advocacy, Community, and Training) programs and events. Cordova explained that the Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month underscores the importance of disability inclusion and illuminates the ongoing need of support from the community through accessibility. More information about Posability can be found on their website at www.posability.life.

The City of Brooksville City Council encourages all residents of Brooksville to join in recognizing the value and potential of every individual, regardless of developmental disabilities, not only in the month of March but all year round. Let us work together to build a more inclusive and accessible community where all can thrive!
