to Reopen Friday, August 1, 2025, at 8:30am

(Brooksville, FL) – Hernando County Parks and Recreation is officially reopening Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park located at 10800 Pine Island Drive (off County Road 495 west of Weeki Wachee), Friday, August 1, 2025, at 8:30am.

After being closed since last year due to significant storm damage from the hurricanes, Parks and Recreation, along with the project’s contractors, have worked tirelessly to repair and upgrade the park. These improvements were made not only to restore access and amenities but also to increase the park’s resilience in the face of future storms.

New and Improved Features at Pine Island Park:

  • ADA-accessible, air-conditioned portable restrooms placed on a concrete pad and designed to be removed during tropical weather events
  • Concrete cornhole boards for added recreation and durability
  • A new food truck pad
  • Transit Bus - Route 9: The Mermaid Route is an opportunity to be picked-up/dropped-off at the Pine Island Park in addition to scheduled Route 9 stops along Shoal Line Boulevard
  • Clear, unobstructed views of the coastline
  • Replenished sand and rebuilt sidewalks for better beach access and safety
  • Metal roofs installed on pavilions for improved storm resistance
  • New playground to be delivered and installed in September!
“We know how much this park means to the community, and we’re thrilled to welcome everyone back,” said Robert Talmage, Hernando County Parks and Recreation Administrator. “This reopening marks a fresh start, with improvements that make Pine Island Park safer, accessible, and more enjoyable for all.”

Hours of operation are seven days a week from 8:30am to sunset.

Please Note: Due to anticipated high demand, the park will close to incoming visitors once it reaches capacity. Guests are encouraged to arrive early, carpool when possible, utilize Mermaid Route 9, and be patient with staff and other visitors. At this time, there is no parking fee collected at Pine Island Park.
