A resident contacted customer service at HCUD after encountering a fraudulent website during an online search for "How to pay my Hernando County water bill." The suspicious website provided a phone number (888-542-9586) for payment assistance but asked for sensitive personal information, including social security numbers, names, and bank account details. The customer wisely refrained from providing any information and reached out to the HCUD’s official customer service number for assistance.
Upon investigation, it was found that the phone number listed on the fraudulent site answered as "Hernando County Utilities," which raised further concern. This scam is alarming, and HCUD is taking immediate action to alert residents and protect them from potential identity theft or fraud. The proper authorities have been notified.
