“They Told Me Not to Tell: Dozier Reform School was a Living Hell" - Book Talk & Signing with Johnny Lee Gaddy
(BROOKSVILLE, FLORIDA) – Join Florida author Johnny Lee Gaddy as he discusses his new book about the infamous state-run Dozier Reform School. Mr. Gaddy is one of several African-American men who are telling the stories of abuse suffered by the boys at the Dozier Reform School in the Panhandle town of Marianna, Florida. The Florida School for Boys, also known as Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys (AGDS), operated from January 1, 1900 to June 30, 2011. For a time, it was the largest juvenile reform institution in the United States. Throughout its 111-year history, the school gained a reputation for abuse, beatings, rapes, and murders. USF researchers have spent the last three years exhuming human remains from school land, and this January, released a final report to the state. Johnny Lee Gaddy was told not to tell about the unimaginable abuse that he and other boys suffered at the Dozier Reform School, but he is not keeping silent. He has published his second book, and will be speaking about his book, the school, and what he went through there.
