February is Black History Month and your Hernando County Public Library System is offering a series of programs in honor of this. On Tuesday, February 10, there will be a special Author Talk and Book Signing with Johnny Lee Gaddy, author of “Dark Days of Horror at Dozier : Rapes, Murders, Beatings & Slavery”.
Florida author, Johnny Lee Gaddy, is one of several African-American men who are telling the stories of abuse suffered by the boys at the infamous state-run Dozier Reform School in the Panhandle town of Marianna, Florida. The Florida School for Boys, also known as the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys (AGDS), was a reform school operated from January 1, 1900 to June 30, 2011. For a time, it was the largest juvenile reform institution in the United States. Throughout its 111 year history, the school gained a reputation for abuse, beatings, rapes, torture, and murders. Mr. Gaddy will share some of these stories and discuss his book during this special event. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
