WHAT IS NAMI Basics??
A 6-week education program for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness. Taught by trained teachers who have raised a child who developed a mental illness before the age of 13.
The goal of the program is to give the basic information necessary to take the best care possible of your child, your family and yourselves.
Course includes:
- Introduction - It is no one's fault. Mental illnesses are brain disorders.
- Getting an accurate diagnosis: childhood bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, ADD, ODD, OCD and others.
- Treatment works! An overview of treatment options.
- Communication skills, problem solving, crisis preparation and response, handling challenging behaviors, relapse planning.
- Record keeping and dealing with systems your child is involved in such as school and juvenile activities.
