The Winter Solstice is the astronomical moment when the Sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn, we have our shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere in terms of daylight. Regardless of what the weather is doing outside your window, the solstice marks the official start of winter. It is on this longest night of the year, that communities are encouraged to take time out of their busy days to remember those who have died while experiencing homelessness, and to strengthen our resolve to work for a world where no life is lived or lost in homelessness. Colonel Dennis Strissel of The Salvation Army of Citrus County, Lt. Chris Doborwicz of The Salvation Army of Lake and Sumter Counties, and Lt. Mike Chamberlain of The Salvation Army of Hernando County will present this Memorial Vigil and lead us in “I’ll be Home for Christmas and Silent Night. Kristy Jocelyn of Mid Florida Homeless Coalition will present the names of those that have passed away this year in Citrus, Hernando, Lake and Sumter Counties, and Major Ken Fagan will close us in prayer.
