SYNOPSIS:
Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie is a poignant memory play about family, dreams, and the painful tension between illusion and reality.
Set in a small St. Louis apartment during the 1930s, the story is narrated by Tom Wingfield, who looks back on his youth living with his domineering mother Amanda and his fragile, painfully shy sister Laura. Amanda, abandoned years earlier by her husband, clings to memories of her Southern belle past and is determined to secure a future for Laura, whose physical disability and extreme anxiety keep her isolated from the world.
Amanda pressures Tom, who longs to escape his monotonous warehouse job and pursue a life of adventure and writing, to bring home a “gentleman caller” for Laura. When Tom finally invites his coworker Jim O’Connor to dinner, the evening unfolds with hope, awkwardness, and heartbreak—forcing each character to confront their illusions and the limits of their dreams.
ROLES AVAILABLE:
Tom Wingfield (Male, 20s–30s)
Narrator / Son
A restless young man trapped between responsibility and desire for freedom. Tom works in a warehouse to support his family but dreams of becoming a poet and adventurer. He narrates the story from the future, reflecting on the guilt and longing he still carries after leaving his family behind.
Amanda Wingfield (Female, late 40s–60s) Mother
A faded Southern belle clinging desperately to memories of her youth and the illusion of gentility. Amanda is controlling, talkative, and fiercely determined to secure a future for her children, especially Laura. Beneath her humor and bluster lies deep fear of abandonment and poverty.
Laura Wingfield (Female, late teens–20s) Daughter
Extremely shy and emotionally fragile, Laura has a slight physical disability and crippling social anxiety. She escapes into her collection of delicate glass animals and old records. Gentle, kind, and painfully self-conscious, she embodies vulnerability and quiet hope.
Jim O’Connor (Male, 20s–30s)
The Gentleman Caller
Tom’s coworker and Amanda’s long-awaited “gentleman caller.” Once a popular high-school hero, Jim is now an ordinary young man with big dreams and relentless optimism. Kind and well-meaning, though sometimes unaware of the emotional impact he has on others.
