Hernando County observes Purple Heart Day
(Brooksville, FL) On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, Hernando County will join other municipalities throughout the nation in observing Purple Heart Day, an observance that commemorates the day in 1782 when General George Washington created the Purple Heart Medal.
The Purple Heart Medal, a symbol of bravery, is awarded to the men and women who were wounded or paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
“Hernando County was designated a Purple Heart County November 7, 2017,” Commissioner Jeff Holcomb stated. “This is the first year we have observed the day and encourage the community to join us in remembering and honoring these fallen and combat-wounded veterans by listening to their stories and thanking them for their service.”
The Purple Heart flag will be flown from sunrise to sunset at the Hernando County Government Center located at 20 N. Main St. in Brooksville. All government offices will remain open.
