Headline: CareerSource Pasco Hernando Helps Local Incarcerated Veterans Find Employment Through the Disabled Veteran’s Outreach Program.

For many ex-offenders, re-entering the workforce can be a significant challenge. Since August 2016, the Disabled Veteran’s Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialists from CareerSource Pasco Hernando have been meeting with veterans at Pasco County Detention Center in New Port Richey providing job seeker workshops. Topics have included Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, available Community Resources, the Importance of Networking, Training opportunities, and the types of jobs that are available in the Pasco County area.

Twice a month, Josh Ellis, Julie Hayes, and Joe Mascaro spend about an hour and a half with veterans held at the Center, teaching them the skills they will need to become successfully employed once they are released. Most of the veterans are receptive to the information presented and are encouraged to ask questions and share ideas during the workshops. “Participation is key. Once a couple of veterans start giving feedback, the majority of the rest get involved [in the conversation],” says Joe Mascaro. In order to give these veterans the best possible information, “we answer questions by giving them industry standard knowledge from trained State of Florida Workforce Professionals” according to Josh Ellis.

The Disabled Veterans Outreach Program is designed specifically to assist those veterans with significant barriers to employment. These barriers can include disability, criminal backgrounds, low income, homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless, age priority (18-24 years of age), no high school diploma or GED, and others. Veterans who are currently confined at the Pasco County Detention Center meet these criteria and often face additional barriers. The CareerSource Pasco Hernando career workshops provide these individuals with the hope and resources to rebuild their lives.

Employers and jobseekers are encouraged to take advantage of CareerSource Pasco Hernando’s veterans programs to enhance their talent and skills. CareerSource Pasco Hernando provides resources to help companies thrive, and help train a talented workforce that will help keep a company competitive, while increasing productivity.
