Magnificent moons rising from the Florida Trail at Cypress Lakes Preserve
(Brooksville, FL) Hernando County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) Program will hold two special events to watch the November and December full moon rise from the darkness of Cypress Lakes Preserve. Preserve Manager Jim King will make a short talk about the preserve, its portion of the Florida Trail and the ESL Program. After moonrise, guests will be entertained with the reading of a story.
The full moons this November and December will appear to be much larger than normal. These are called perigee moons because they are closer to the earth than usual due to the moon’s oval orbit. The full moon in November will appear to be about 14 percent larger, while the December full moon will look almost as big. These will be the largest full moons so far for the 21st century and they will not return for more than two decades.
A short walk on the Florida Trail will be necessary to reach the viewing site. Guests should bring a folding chair, flashlight or headlight, and perhaps a non-alcoholic beverage (alcohol is not allowed on ESL preserves). A snack will be provided. Insect repellent will be available if needed.
Space is limited and reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until filled.
Please do not block the gate. Park safely off the pavement on the shoulder of Ridge Manor Blvd. Remember, don’t be late, the moon won’t wait and we won’t be at the gate.
Call or Email to reserve your space.
